Ahhh Egypt. What a beautiful place. I am in Cairo for a few days and just a short drive out of the city are the pyramids. Imagine pyramids in your own backyard. They truly are awe inspiring. I got to witness the pyramids of Giza. These are the most famous… the ones you see on postcards. But no picture could ever compare to the real thing. Standing in the middle of the desert looking up at these magnificent structures they will remain indelibly etched in my mind. Funny that I came to Egypt for a change of scenery only to be reminded of my situation by the two famous monuments in front of me. I laughed thinking how many other people look at the pyramids and think of “boobs!” I certainly will tell my reconstructive surgeon that I don’t want anything that pointy.
The sun here is hot. It’s 35C and sunny every day, but at this time of year there is a beautiful breeze. I have to pinch myself constantly as I can’t believe I am really here. What better way to see the pyramids than to travel through the desert on a camel! Yup, camels are still popular here in many villages and all around the pyramids you can hire one. My camel’s name was Mickey Mouse. I know, not very Arabic but at least I could remember it. You don’t realize just how high up you will be riding until you climb aboard and then it stands up! Good thing I’m not afraid of heights as it’s a long way down if you fall. I was on a real high riding on my two hump camel, gazing at the pyramids…it was like something out of a movie. Except that I’m blonde and blue eyed so not very exotic looking…but a girl can pretend. There was no Omar Sherif or Lawrence of Arabia to whisk me away to their Sultans tent but for an hour or two I let my imagination run wild. This is just what I needed. An oasis away from the last few months of pain and worry.
