I’ll take Breast Cancer for $1000 Alex

Blogs, Google, websites…the information is endless. Keep reading. Keep learning. Keep working to prepare and share.

Since my diagnosis April 30 I haven’t stopped reading every article, blog, book and tweet I can find about breast cancer. I never knew there were so many types of breast cancer, seven I believe. And although I am certainly no expert, I joke with my family and friends that I could go on Jeopardy and rock the breast cancer category. “I’ll take Breast Cancer for $1000 Alex.” And of course it would be a DAILY DOUBLE!

With all the information readily available it’s sometimes hard to keep from reading negative posts and horror stories of surgeries gone wrong, misdiagnoses and misinformation masked as miracle treatments. But for the most part, people have been candid and honest about their experiences and I feel very prepared for my upcoming surgery June 13th. Yep, lucky 13. I’ve started compiling a list of all the things I will need for my recovery as I will have very limited use of my arms for several weeks. I will have 4 drainage tubes to manage for three weeks. I won’t be able to shower, wash my hair, lift anything over 5lbs, will need to sleep sitting up for several weeks and the list goes on. Now that I have a confirmed date, I have an even greater focus and am working diligently to gather all the paraphernalia needed to get through the surgery and recovery as easily and stress free as possible. The list is growing but so is my confidence and I am ready to take on whatever this experience throws at me…even a daily double.
