Thanksgiving weekend….always one I look forward to. Family, turkey dinner and nice weather for walking and enjoying the fall colours. But not this year for me. Not because I am unwell… because I’m doing something different. Instead of turkey and pumpkin pie, I’m having falafel, tahini and kefta. I’ve flown to Egypt. Yup, you read correctly. It’s always been on my bucket list and so with a doctor’s note in hand and a giant ziploc full of meds I am now in Cairo. The people here are very nice and weather is spectacular. I was nervous before getting on the plane. I had a special note to get through security as the tissue expanders in my chest have metal ports that could set of the metal detectors. That’s all I’d need….getting searched and patted down because my foobs set off an alarm! Fortunately I was ok. I only brought carry on luggage as every time I travel my luggage tends to get lost so I took no chances this time and crammed everything into a small carry on bag and a knapsack. My pills alone take up a lot of room so I had to be very careful with what I packed. I have a private guide and tours booked everyday. I’m pushing myself but am managing. I fall into bed at night without even eating dinner. I’m tired but it’s a good tired. It’s exhaustion brought on by exercise and site seeing and experiencing a new country, people and culture. The freedom I feel not having to deal with doctors and needles and procedures is so liberating. I know I will have to resume all of that when I get home. But for the time being I am playing tourist and living a “normal” life even for just a week or two. Patti the cancer patient is back in Canada… Patti the adventurer is here in Egypt!
